It really doesn't make any difference. We used to have to move driveshaft center support bearings off to the side to accommodate a pneumatic blower. It is more common to mount the center bearing up near engine level. However, you do need some offset. A drivehsft needs some offset for for the needles to have to move. If there is no offset, the needles will not move and wear into the cross in a hurry.
