Basically:
- pre-1954 were low-pressure engines with babbitted-bearing rods.
- 1954 and later were higher pressure engines with insert rod bearings
- 1955-2nd series and later had a water pump located poorly for use in 47-55 trucks
- 1956 and later had a higher compression heads
