The geometry changes just enough to cause a weak spring to become weaker. A new set of springs will put it back to where it belongs more efficiently, but in the interest of a fix that could last a few years, it won't hurt anything to raise it. That's the best explanation I can come up with why that fix didn't last when I tried it. Maybe someone else with more than anecdotal evidence can explain it?
