Many people do not weld on re-assembly. That allows you to paint the parts before assembly and eliminate a spot where rust will form at the welds. Unless you plan to do some heavy hauling the bed side will not be likely to move. To make it even more secure you can bolt it exactly where you want it then drill the bolt holes one at a time for a 3/8 bolt instead of 5/16.
