The diagonal split is mostly on FWD vehicles. The reason for the diagonal split if to maintain even braking for vehicle control should on circuit fail. If one fails,, you still have one front and one rear brake still operable, on opposite sides to reduce a pull.
On your brake failure, you really need to fine out why it failed. May not be related to the master cylinder.
