There is a slot on each end of the synchro drum that allows access to the snap ring on the inboard end of the cones/rings. I have a pair of small needle nose pliers that I have ground flats on the out side of the tips. These fit in the slot to expand the snap ring.
Putting them back in tests your patience. You will need to expand the snap ring and keep it up against the inboard edge of the brass ring while installing the cone. Not easy but doable. Here is a link to the shop manual description.
