A dairy farmer, part-time preacher always said about people who were obtuse, cantankerous, or otherwise annoying, "We need people like him" as well as, "Bless his heart." I never asked him to elaborate. I figured that he was either employing discrete sarcasm, or that people like that make the rest of us feel better about ourselves, in that WE are not like that.
