If the engine stopped at a spot where the points were closed,
then there would be current flowing thru the coil all the time.
Having a cover over it makes it worse because the heat is
contained and can't dissipate properly, that by the way also
shortens the life of the coil under normal operation. Better
check your points, that can fry them also.
If you would have been lucky enough to stop the engine with the
points open....nota thing would have happened.
Older style coils are oil filled to transfer the heat.
How hard is it to get parts over in Japan???
