So I think I determined some of my confusion with the VIN code versus the wheelbase (according to the wheelbases listed in the 1957 Truck Specifications document. It appears the frame was modified with an extra foot welded in, which increased the wheelbase. It was hidden behind the way this bed is mounted to the frame which is one reason I missed it when I looked the truck over. Still wishing I hadn't missed that, but, live and learn...
While I want to clean this truck up, it will continue to be a farm truck and I want to continue to use it. I'm now on the fence about whether I want to keep this modified frame, or keep my eyes open for a larger truck to come along and "upgrade" the frame. I have a potential lead on a 1.5ton with a very rusty body, but a good condition frame (and this one I was able to inspect all around). Of course doing that would end up with larger axles and perhaps more difficulty in sourcing things like brake upgrades, wheels, etc... Still it would put my mind at ease as far as payload.
Anybody have any experience with evaluating/inspecting frame modifications like this? If it's sound, I figure it should still haul loads just fine, but not sure how I can tell if it is sound.
