You used to be able to buy stick on shift indicators that were in two parts and were made from etched polycarbonate.
One part had the shift points marked on it and the other a small arrow gun sight shaped indicator.
They attached with double side tape to the column.
One part to the fixed barrel and the other to the rotating collar section
Admittedly they were intended for later columns but i'm sure you could adapt one or make something similar.

Only problem is for the life of me I can't remember who sold the bloomin' things!
