The regulator won't need polarizing. The generator however does.Voltage at the battery will vary some. That is what the regulator does. At an idle the generator might not make much voltage. The advantage of an alternator is that it will. Nothing wrong with that on most trucks. Turn the idle up while measuring the volts at the battery. If the volts comes up to about 14.5 you are fine.
