I see what you're saying. If that's the case, where's the flange? The other thing I wonder is if the oil seal is completely gone (except for the metal ring w/o any rubber) why doesn't the gear lube from the trans run into my U-joint basically unobstructed.
Just pulled out my parts book (Chevy '29-'57). Shows the front yoke for 1/2 ton 4 speed - Group 5.555 Pt# 3658724. Went to Group 4.318 - the number in parentheses (Gasket - Seal - Shield, Transmission rear bearing retainer) - shows Pt# 591353 (Seal, oil (stamped 591353). Maybe that's it - wonder where the rest of it is. Need to see if I can track one down! Thanks.
