24VAC is nothing special other than you probably have the parts already (most HVAC controls are 24VAC).. I can't say its less of a shock hazard and as properly installed 110V circuit is just as safe as a 24VAC one.
If you already have a mag start you could simply run your shop lights off the mag start on/off switch. Same thing thing.
