The idea was good, and they didn't burn, but something quite often managed to happen to them in the course of pulling a head, an engine or even a distributor. A ballast resister was simple. If it quit running, you simply put a jumper across the two terminals. If it ran, you knew the resister was bad. They were fine for grocery getters, but that wasn't my idea of a car in those days.
