I had same issue on my 49 suburban. I used a product by Durham putty that can by bought at lowes/home. It is a powder that mixes wit water to a paste consistency, will spread w a trowel, but as can says is rock hard when dried. It will not look like wood but can be sanded and painted. I put a carpet over rear area after painting it. Hope this helps
