Lots of work on Brad's part ... pure enjoyment (and references) for you!

For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 2,951 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 2,951 | I have read several posts that mention the 235 can't push a 5spd o.d., or it will get torn up, and I'd like to get it right. Overdrive simply means that the final drive gear is something less than a 1:1 ratio. For instance, if the OD gear is 0.73, it makes no difference to the engine whether the transmission has 4 gears or 5 gears, it's still 0.73. The engine "sees" the gear, not how many shifts it took to get it there.
I like the Borg Warner T5 transmissions as a viable option for daily driver trucks. The T5 will not withstand abuse. If burning rubber is your thing, then look for a Tremec.
Choosing and installing a T5 is fairly easy, but getting everything you need to keep the bench seat and the cable speedo is getting harder each year because the S10 cable connection tail housing is becoming very scarce.
I'll be glad to make recommendations if you have any interest in a T5. I will be using a 3.73 rear, 235/75R15 or possibly 235/70R15 tire (29" or 28" diameter) with my T5. The OD gear is 0.73 and calculations show my highway RPMs at 70 mph to be 2200 with the 29" tire and 2290 with a 28" tire.
