They are correct! Lock the door from the inside and then slide over and get out the passenger door.
The idea was you parallel park along city streets and don't get out into traffic. Also, you could then unlock and open passenger door for your girl, then she reaches over and unlocks driver door.
Grew up driving Model A's and '40's trucks...you get used to it.
