vins are on tag on drivers door frame - only diff in 56 - 57 is hood and grill [57 1 year only for both], and its not uncommon to find a truck from back then titled as a year newer or older than they appear, as a lot of places called them the year they were first registered - my 57 panel was made in November 57 but by the time it got to the dealer in Vancouver BC and then to the logging co that ordered it, wound up being tagged as a 58
yours coulda been one of the first 57's, which woulda been sold in 56 - or whoever told ya don't know - can't imagine anyone purposely changin grill and hood both to 57
