Bigbassmann as a woodworker myself I wouldn't put red oak anywhere there is a chance of getting wet; red oak is an open grain (pore) wood. I would use white oak which is a closed grain wood; white oak is used in the boating industry and was used on the USS Constitution (1812 US navy sailing ship) The original wood used in most Chevy pickup was yellow pine.
