Not a good idea, Gents ...

I don't want to be a nattering nabob of negativity, but moving firewood across a state line is very much frowned upon

In fact, St. Mary's County is a known infestation area for Emerald Ash Borers My guess is that the Virginians don't need any of those brought in.

More info on pests in oak firewood

Additionally, movement of firewood is considered to be a leading vector for the transmission of Sudden Oak Death (a form of the fungus Phytophthora which is a particularly nasty and pervasive pest that costs farmers like me thousands of dollars annually in crop loss, fungicide purchase, etc). Once Phytophthora gets in your soil, you've got it -- you can't eradicate it, only control it -- to a degree. I've got it here and it's the leading cause of my crop loss.

As a tree guy, I just thought we'd all want to be responsible about this and find a more local source for our firewood... (the experts agree that the recommended course of action is to source your firewood from within a 50-mile radius of the campsite) This isn't funny or trivial, my Brothers. To us farmers, invasive pests are a very serious matter.

Thanks,
John
