I would suspect accelerator pump. It provides a little extra fuel when you step on the gas. Since you say it runs fine once you get past the dead spot, it would suggest that the ignition is working properly (unless someone slipped some Ford distributor guts in on you. ). You can check the accelerator pump by looking down the throat of the carb while you goose the throttle, engine off. You should see some gas squirting.
