If the diverter plug is driven in, the engine is set up for a full-flow oil filter and the proper filter MUST be used. It flows all the oil passing from the oil pump to the bearings, and if the passage is plugged the engine will die from lack of lubrication. It would be possible to put a 1/2" inside diameter connector hose suitable for engine oil from one port to the other if you prefer not to run a filter. If the diverter plug is in the "out" position, a regular bypass filter can be run, or the ports can be blocked off with 1/2" NPT plugs.
