It sounds like maybe that case was used in another application and that hole is used there?
They had to put it in there for some reason. I did see some literature confirming the power goes in a hole in that same location on the later years as Denny mentioned above and confirmed that the power goes in the side on the 986067.
I will have to do some more research and see what I can find
