It is a fitted, Die Cast Frame, which sandwiches in between the two shells of the Box...and, it has two Steel 'Gates' or Notched sliding pieces.
Obviously this was made to go in the Shift Box, but, what for?
The Shift Box functions perfectly without it, and, I find no other examples of it on the internet.
