Thank you for your in depth response.
Do you think it is important to measure the tension on each spring before putting them back in? Basically, Ive taken apart the head to do a valve job because the car would not start due to what I believe to be low compression. Two cylinders had 0 compression, and the others ranging from 10-40 pounds. As Ive taken the head apart, Ive found a bent pushrod on the cylinder that was missing the spacer, as well as several springs that were upside down, and a missing oil boot. That is only on about half of the valves-the other valves I still need to check.
Good news is that most of the seats look fine. A few valves will need to be replaced, and a few valve seals, but again, do you think the spring tension could affect compression in that it does not allow valve to seal properly? And if so, what is easiest way to measure spring tension? You mentioned putting them side by side, but I assume that measures height and not tension.
