To answer the original question, the RTV would have worked fine. But I like the old idea of cutting one out of paper. There are plenty of gaskets out there made from "fish paper" or "cellulosic" material. For other applications I have cut gaskets from thin aluminum stock, and even made a head gasket for my bike from a large copper pipe split, flattened, cut and heat treated.
