I thought they were bolted onto the frame, but I've only worked on 1954 enclosed drive-shafts in the last 30 or so years (no manual-transmission cross-member).

The 1954 Hydra-Matic cross-members are also bolted on (both the rear-engine cross-member and the rear-transmission cross-member).
