I remember the difficulty of installing the chipboard headliner in my '50 about 10 years ago. You had to make sure the bow was well opened to allow the liner to fit inside. I have noticed that over the years, the headliner has shrunk (typical paper product) due to the combination of hot summers and wet winters. Now it has pulled away at areas I originally trimmed during installation. Fiberglass might be the way to go.
