Yes, you can smooth with plastic filler over the lead and it will probably be fine if you don't want to take the time and health risk to do as suggested by Carl. I saw this topic covered on "OverHaulin" and they used a flexible filler of some sort made by 3M. The claim was it was more flexible than regular plastic filler. I think the car being overhauled was a early 70's El Camino
