On the open drive shaft the yoke has splines,and there is a bolt that holds it in the center of the tail-shaft. On the closed system it will leak as described above. There is no seal at the tail-shaft in that system. There is a compression seal at the end of the "ball" housing and a set of gaskets with shims that seal and adjust the ball to the transmission. The procedure in the manual posted above works.
