Virg; when you pulled the float, did you check it against the guage? You can run a clip lead to ground the sender, turn the key on, and move the float lever up and down, the guage should follow the sender movement. If you have an ohm meter, disconnect the wire going to the guage and read the resistance from full to empty, it should read 0 ohms at empty, 30 ohms at full. If this checks out, the sender is good, and the faulty reading is coming from the guage itself.
