The ammeter should have a + and a - on the face. The -, or discharge side should be on the left as you face the gauge and the +, or charge should be on your right. The + terminal would be the post on the back side of the gauge behind the + on the front side of the gauge. This is how my little cartoon shows it.
I wonder what this 14 gauge wire is for? To my knowledge, all loads would come off the - (neg) side of the ammeter. That negative side would also be the connection point for any charging system output. I thought the only wire on the +, or positive side was at least a 10 gauge, and it went to a connection on the starter or starter switch that is commoon with BATT positive.
This is a wiring area where you want to be very clear on what goes where.
