Touch the red probe to the wire stud & ground the black probe to the case. Your sending unit should show 0 +/- ohms in the empty position and 30 +/- ohms in the full position. Replacement sending units are $50 so it's worth checking your original out first. You can find multi-meters for $10-15 or less.
