It can be used to test your cruising mixture.
Find a slight grade that requires light throttle to maintain speed, and record your highest vacuum setting.
Any jet or metering rod change that brings the vacuum up means better mileage = more efficient.
Same can be done with spark timing but remember you're dealing with the vacuum advance (not the initial or centrifugal).
