The only reason for a "Runtz" is stable volts for the fuel gauge. There would be no reason to use anything more complicated than a drop resister for anything else in the electrical system. And the LM7806 works well and is cheap. I was just attempting to give a fun nit of information about what the "Runtz" is. Never meant to hijack the thread. My apology.
