So its a points distributor? Try another capacitor/condensor they'll affect it; is the coil overly hot? its' easy to get a mismatch with the coil and ballast resistor nowadays and the ignition will pull too much current and act all wonky.
I recall an ohm reading of about 4 - 4 1/2ohms is about right - i can easily be wrong, maybe somebody else can chime in on it. The coil will be less than an ohm and the ballast resister is sized to the coils' resistance. back in the day the local napa had all the right stuff laying around and took care of you and you didn't even have to know about it, nowadays you're lucky to find a ballast resistor of any value.
