Thanks to all of you who responded. I never realized how much additional expense and red tape that was involved in dealing across our northern border.

It makes you wonder why getting auto parts from the lower 48 to Canada is so expensive, and yet so many of us cross the border to get our perscriptions filled at reduced prices. You would think that there must be an easier and more friendly way to meet all our needs.

Thanks again for sharing your comments.

Dave

I had to get the Import Licence because I was having the parts shipped to me by truck. It would have been a nightmare for the trucker bringing the parts across the border, and I wanted to make it easy for him as he was doing me a favor.

If I was picking them up myself, I would not have needed it as I could have explained it to the Customs people at the border. From what I understood over the phone, this licence does not expire. I can now use it to import whatever I wish.

There was no cost to get the licence, and I did it entirely over the phone. It took approximately 10 minutes. I can't find the link that I used. I searched Google for "Canada Customs" and followed one of the links. it was really easy (unusual for our Federal Government!).

Okay...I am back out of my crawl space.

[Greg's head is hanging low]..I did not find my invoices from Canada Customs and Revenue back in 2000 and 2001.

I did find my Chevy Duty invoices and office memos from my accounting department regarding brokerage fees owing when I worked in engineering....I had all my parts from the USA delivered to the office because I was there 8-10 hours per day.

I am sure I have the paperwork because I am anal about keeping stuff. [engineering background] it is probably inserted in some other stuff by my error.

So...no back up documents, no claim for duties.

My wife remembers the day I got those invoices for duties ...and I declared, from that day forward I would purchase from Canadian suppliers only. Hence, my relationship with Scott's in AB.

Photo.. thank you for sharing your rationale for using an import licence.

Fla54Chevy3100... I am glad we Canadians provided a little bit of entertainment for you.

Red58..thank you for your emails and input today.

Thank you all my other Canadian brothers for sharing your thoughts on this thread.

Now I have to put all the crap away I dug out...

PNR123,
I use Bill's Truck Shop for most everything and if he doesn't have it, I use one of the US suppliers. I like dropping by Bill's because after I pick up what I need, I go out into his yard to drool over all the old Bolts that he has recently imported, from California. He does this several times a year.

I asked Patrick to use parcel post and I got a big box for less than $40.00 total. Scott's is less than an hour for me so I picked up all my big stuff but he has always been very close to U.S vendor prices. There's some other very good mechanical part's resources in Alberta if you look around.
