Oh, so that "fix" came along earlier than I thought. I know I read somewhere that they weren't used til the sixties. Now, knowing that they had been around for many years before that, I probably read that they weren't used in these old trucks very much until the sixties. I imagine that is when most of the original bushings began wearing out. Thanks for the info.

Happy 4th to you too!

I have seen U-joint bearing caps with folded metal mounting before, they do seem hard to find.
I don't know if they were aftermarket made or if they were GM made.
Maybe someone knows why they were made different?

What did the old U-joint bearing caps look like?
Folded metal or Solid mounting. (check 1st picture)

Ether way what you have should work.

Do you have the link to Classic Car Parts.

Happy 4th of July !!!

I had the solid-type bearing caps.

The photo at Classic Parts shows a u-joint that looks exactly like my old one, except mine didn't have the locking clips.

Here is the link for that u-joint: https://www.classicparts.com/1940-54-U-Joint-Repair-Kit-1_2-Ton/productinfo/92-215/

Also, Jorb, assuming I find the time to write up a how-to article, do I have your permission to possibly use a couple of the diagrams that you posted to this thread?

Happy 4th to you as well. I just took my truck for another shakedown run. About ten miles this time. All seems good!!!!

I'm surprised that classicparts.com sent you a u-joint with that type of bearing cap,
considering it doesn't jive with the photo on their website.
Classicparts.com is a good place to buy parts from, at least I haven't heard anything bad about them.
For all I know it might be better than the solid-type bearing caps.
I guess you could ask them who makes the u-joint with that type of bearing cap or where they got it from and if it has a part number.

Do I have your permission to possibly use a couple of the diagrams?
Yes you can.

I just submitted the first part of my tech tips on how to break open the Balljoint Housing and get to the seals.
