66 c20 cab and clip on 63 gmc 2500 dually? - Fri May 17 2019 01:23 AM

Just looking for any heads up on the swap. I have a 66 Chevy C20 cab etc that's currently sitting on a 60-66 k10 frame. I didnt do this swap, it was an Ebay last second purchase. Any how the frame needs work to say the least. Im not really interested in keeping it. But I found a 63 GMC 2500 dually ex fire co truck that a guy is taking the body only. I got a shot at the rolling chassis and complete drivetrain which I wont see till this Sunday. To boot this GMC only has 10k miles with a 305 v6 in it. Im really just looking for anything that i may need to know before pulling the trigger. All input is appreciated……….

Welcome to the site. Nothing came through in the 60-66 forum. I hope the Driveline (and GMC) guys might offer advice.

Hopefully.. I actually got a look at the 63 chassis today. Looks like Im actually moving forward with it. The cab axle length is 60 inch which I dont mind. Im not sure what bed choice im going with yet. There were a few other differences like it had a hydraulic clutch and the reservoir was part of the master cylinder. It had a vacumm brake booster the was mounted on the drivers side inner fender. Engine sounded good and it moved under its own power. Rear cab mounts were something I was not familiar with but seemed to be in the right place. But once again all input is appreciated. Do I need to move this forum to "Driveline Section" some how or ?? Thanks again...

We need a gmc guy to verify the gmc frame situation. I am not current on the yr differences on gmc. Likely frames are close but there will be differences.
Hang on to the k10 parts.

Come on guys, alitta help is all im asking for. I thought for sure someone would know exactly what I am asking about. I didn't think this would be a big "head scratcher" for all the professionals and knowledge bouncing around this website. Ive learned a lot just routing around. I just couldn't find exactly what I was looking for so I thought id ask. Or maybe this is a really straight forward swap and Im wasting everyone's time????

I think the problem may be that no one here has done it, which is kind of amazing, thus they don’t have an answer. The Chevys changed the frame style in 1963 to the more modern rails without the X. Your ‘66 cab came from such a frame. If the GMC frame is the modern no X frame I would think it would swap. Might take a bit of bracket modification and some welding skills but anything is possible. I say go for it.🛠

The thought never crossed my mind that the swap was possibly never done... Ha. Well I did put eyes on the 63 roller. It does NOT have an X frame. Im just waiting for the current owner the get the body removed at this point. I guess ill find out the actual differences when I have it side by side. Heres a pic of the roller. He wasn't letting the body go with it either. Unfortunately..

I bet the Chevy and GMC Cabs all bolt to the frame the same. The front clips may be different the way they mount under the radiator...

When you say "body" are you talking about the Fire Service Body (bed) or the Cab/Front Clip?

Update again. I guess at this point ill figure out da differences and adaptations I need to make myself. I did get the 63 roller today , a few days earlier than I thought tho. I still need to do some patch work on the cab b4 moving it over. I also guess it wouldn't be a bad idea to por-15 da frame also at this point. I took some measurement and such, found some good and bad. Mounts on the frame opposed to the cab seem to be in the right places and right differences apart from each other. Core support frame mounts are at the right width. I did notice the my cab only has 1 hole at the master cylinder area, where as the 63 cab had 2 equal size holes for the brake/clutch master hydraulic combo setup. Will get a pic of the master soon. I guess ill cross that road soon enough. I added a couple pics to give ya da visual. ill post more as I get em. So far so good I guess....
