One problem solved, but a new one comes up.

Same 1941 Chevrolet 1/2 ton AK pick up truck.

Now we're having issues attaching the back of the transmission to the torque tube. The drive shaft (male) has mated with the transmission output (female), but there is close to a one inch gap between the mounting plate to rear of transmission. We are aware that bell shaped end of the torque tube does move up and down on a thread, but not enough to close the gap.

Currently we have the front motor mounts (new repro) and rear transmission mounts (also new repro), bolted down.

Anyone have any ideas what may be the issues here? I am including pictures.

Have you loosened the collar on the sliding portion on the front of the tube? If the inner portion of the driveshaft is clean that outer part should slide in and out allowing you to mate the parts. You are not putting it together with those old gaskets are you? You need the correct thickness of gaskets to properly seal and also to allow movement of the ball. You cannot readily determine the gasket thickness without detaching the main torque tube and just have the bell portion attached. A search should show how this process is done. The gaskets at the collar end of the bell should also be replaced.

Are the rear wheels off the ground? Is the rear of the truck frame resting on jack stands?

If the wheels are ON the ground the torque tube should then move slightly and allow enough clearance to slide the collar forward to mate up with the back of the tranny. A small diameter drift pin might be needed to align the first bolt hole to bolt the parts into place. I just went through this exercise today on my ‘46 and had the same problem. The solution was as described. Good Luck.
