Hello,

I am going to be putting in a hydraulic clutch setup to in my 1956 chevy 3100. I'm sure someone here has solved this setup..any suggestions? I see Wilwood has a variety of options.. I would be happy to use the original clutch pedal and have a master cylinder located on the underside of the cab. Totally open to options...

Any thoughts or pictures are appreciated.

In my opinion if you can use a mechanical clutch linkage that should be first and best choice. Much less trouble in the long run than hydraulic.

Yukon,

A hydraulic clutch gives you no feedback through the pedal. You know the clutch is engaged when the vehicle starts moving forward or the engine stalls. Mechanical linkage gives real "feel" allowing precise engagement.

Thanks for the input.

I believe the NV3500 requires some sort of hydraulic clutch setup..but I could be wrong. I believe the bellhousing window is on the passenger side of the trans. I should have mentioned earlier what transmission I was going to be using.

I really do prefer the ''real feeling'' of clutch engagement...giving true feedback through the pedal.

1960-62 Chevy trucks came from the factory with hydraulic clutches that had the TO arm and slave cylinder on the passenger side, might check it out.

Do some homework on the diameter and stroke of the master and slave cylinders. A mismatch can result in either not enough pedal stroke to fully disengage the clutch, or possibly an extremely stiff pedal. Both cylinders, as well as the leverage of the pedal arm, have to work well together.

With my research is appears the factory bore for a NV3500 was 18mm or .70. I will look into the 60-62 setups, and see what they came with for a MC bore. Wilwood offers a MC with a .75 bore, but I will be sure to match the MC to the slave cylinder regardless.

This is a very similar setup to what I was thinking, check out the link if you have time and feel free to comment on any pitfalls you may see with this idea...

I'm going with hydraulic throw out bearing also to eliminate clearance problems.

The round track cars we built with the small diameter triple disc clutch to decrease the rotating mass of the engine used a slave cylinder that was incorporated into the throwout bearing. That clutch assembly is only about 8" in diameter and it gets its torque carrying capacity by having three friction discs and two steel "floater" plates sandwiched between them. The whole assembly fits inside the bellhousing, mounting on the transmission bearing retainer. It's a neat, compact setup that should also work well on a street machine if the hydraulic throwout bearing is used with a conventional clutch. The triple disc clutch is sort of an on/off situation that doesn't respond well to an effort to make a smooth takeoff from a stop!

Search Ebay for "hydraulic throwout bearing". There's dozens of them listed, some at very reasonable prices.

I used an early '60s Chevy dual master cylinder (brake-clutch) on a '34 Ford pickup, along with the matching clutch slave cylinder. Unbelievably simple to set up - run the hard line anywhere you need to without hassling with routing mechanical linkage. Since then I'm sold on hydraulic clutch systems.

I know this thread was a couple of months back but just wanted to share some wisdom. I 'm putting a Muncie in my 59' and shopped around for a hydraulic clutch kit, plenty out there but most were out of budget (CHEAP). I found an assembly at Speedway that was completely bolt in (you may need to fab up a support bracket) they even had a master cylinder that matched the bore needed. All told I have about $200.00 in parts excluding the clutch disc and pressure plate. Still working out the under cab mount for the master cylinder as I wanted to keep the original pedal assembly. I'll post some pics when its completed.

Curious, did you use the bell housing with the passenger side access?
