On my '49 Chevy 3100 1/2 ton the part in the picture was under the bed and attached to an angle iron brace spanning between the frame members. It is obviously cut off. What function did it serve and what is it called?
I cannot ID the part, Joe; however, my guess is that it was part of the spare tire carrier?
Is there a spare tire carrier under the bed?
Spare tire carrier piece. Too light of metal for part of a trailer hitch.
Does not match spare tire carriers on Ebay. If it was attached to an add-on/non original "angle iron" cross member, it's not original. Also depends on where under the bed. Front middle rear. And what direction the cut off was facing. Except for light construction as Martin said, I would have guessed trailer hitch. But the part has unique, era correct form.
Maybe an add-on exhaust hanger.
That is a section of a slider for spare tire carrier. Looks like most of it has been cut off

Where?? I need one (eventually).
Its what 52 Carl said. My truck still has the piece under it.
Kevin.......this is what I found for sale. Pic 1https://www.ebay.com/itm/1-USED-ORI...DER-BED-SPARE-TIRE-CARRIER/153405156925?
Joe, as Carl confirmed and was said by others, It's the slider. It's a piece of what is sometimes called the "track", for the carrier.. Not shown in the Ebay pics.
Mounted just like you said. Pic 2

Thanks, but I have a '51 that takes the swing out style. I have one from a '72 Chevy that I may try to adapt. One of the members sent me some dimensions off his.
