I've got a 4 speed original tranny that grinds in 3rd. Is the fix to access the gears through side panel of tranny and check the gear wear? Also haven't changed any fluids so what is recommended and what type oil. Thanks.

Add oil first. Low oil can cause this symptom.

I'd say drain the oil first and look for metal. Then add new oil if it drains pretty clean, some brass is okay but no steel.
