Just a FYI for those in Calfornia. Saw an article today in the Fresno Bee on Page A19 stating January 1, 2013 the California DMV is planning to issue nostalgia-stoking replicas of the yellow, blue and black plates from the 1950's to 1970's. The article also states that in order for the DMV to print the plates there will need to be at least 7,500 ordered by January 1, 2015.

The article stated that the initial cost of the plates would be $50.00 and there would be an extra $40 cost to renew the registration.

Depends on what they look like.
If they are silk screened like modern plates I don't think they will look good at all. If they're stamped like originals then maybe.

The FAQ pages only states theft they will be reflectorized. unless I missed it in the description.

Legacy License Plates FAQs

Q14: How many pre-orders does the DMV need to receive in order to initiate the production of the Legacy Plates?
A: The law enacting this plate program (AB 1658, 2012) allows until January 1, 2015 to reach the required minimum 7,500 pre-orders for any one of the plate styles.

Does it mean that there must be 7500 per orders for each style or 7500 total ?

Q16: How long after the program is implemented will I receive the plates I have pre-ordered?
A: Approximately 9-12 months.

It could be two years before an order get filled...

For those who have the old existing plates, they can be re-issued but you have to prove they belonged to the vehicle...
I was able to get my old black and yellow plates re-issued... I had a few old registration cards for proof...

California government = confusing at best!

My buddy seems to have no problem buying old matching plates that never belonged to his vehicle and having them assigned to his vehicles??

That would be under the YOM (Year Of Manufacture) procedure.
