heater switch on '56 chevy with deluxe heater

while warming up the 'ol girl last night' i noticed an orange glow from under the dash. i had the switch on low and the small coil that is on the back of the switch was glowing; when i switched the motor to high the coil returned to normal. the switch is new from carters. is this normal operation? dave b.

Yes! That is a resistor for the lower speeds.
Be shure you have a 12 volt switch. smile
