hi
Looking at a 53 chevy project truck to buy. The certificate of title has LMB------ and immediately thereafter is typed the serial (vin)#.
I dont understand what the LMB------- is there for. Is that a prefix for a frame number or an engine number? any help appreciated. thanks for your time.

Have you asked the North Carolina DMV?

Most likely the truck was titled by engine number.

I was thinking what Cletis said. There is a flat place on the block behind the dist. Clean it off & check the numbers on it. If they match the title you are in good shape. If the title doesn't match any numbers on the truck you better not buy it. Let thev owner straighten it out. It can be a hastle.

Wrenchbender is right about matching numbers. If the paperwork isn't perfect, you're in trouble. And if the engine has been changed, you may have to pay to get a "bond." One more way to discourage the old car hobby.

jerry,

Since you have been instructed to check for the engine serial number, you might as well check for the truck serial number. It is on a plate mounted on the driver's side door opening, between the hinges.

That code was also sometimes used for the Title/Registration.

The LMB prefix does not match 1953 car or truck codes.

My Chevy Inline 6 Engines 1929-1989 shows no listing for LMB.

Perhaps LMB is the initials of a rebuilder. Do the stamped numbers and letters match on the engine/door tag? Often the stamps do not match in size or font which is a kind of giveaway that someone has tampered with it.

Maybe someone got twitchy fingers and meant to type "LBM" which are legit 53' letters for a 216 truck motor?
