My 1954 1/2 ton truck "Old Greenie" has a lot of patina with the oxidized paint, scratches, scrapes and a few little surface rust spots. A few years ago, I found a 1950's camper shell with rust on much of the surface. It didn't seem to make sense to put new paint on the shell that would conflict with the patina on Old Greenie so I put the shell on, as found. One day a lady in her fifties came up to me in the parking lot and exclaimed "Your truck is beautiful. It is PERFECT! Don't you dare change a thing". The word "PERFECT!" brought me an inner chuckle but I knew what the lady meant. Old Greenie is perfect to me too and a great, long-time friend from the vintage steel species. Many people say how they like Old Greenie as she is and not to change anything. Only about one in ten say paint/restoration would be an improvement. Stovebolt trucks spread feel-good happy moments all over the world, every day. I was very happy when I saw that Old Greenie and her buddy "The Taj" a travel trailer with 61 years of aluminum patina, were included in the Stovebolt 2012 General Trucks calendar (month of November).

Had a guy pull into a parking space next to the truck & as he got out, he hit my door a good thump. I got out & asked him to be more carefull.
His comment - " what the hell, its just an old truck"
He had 4 flat tires when he returned to his car.

My favorite comment came from a woman in the grocery store parking lot. She was sitting in her car waiting on her husband and I parked the Suburban behind her. As I walked past she said, "When I heard that door shut I knew what it was and had to turn around and look". She said her dad had an AD truck for years when she was growing up and she hadn't heard that sound in years but immediately recognized it.

While I was talking to her, her husband came out of the store and he went nuts over the Suburban. He said he was in a band and they rode all over Texas in a Suburban like it back in the day.

"It's just a phase. He'll grow out of it." Mama, 1964

i think my favorite is anytime someone says "man youre never gonna finish that thing."

People sleep peacefully in their beds at night because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.

Since I can't hear very well I've learned to read lips pretty good and its comical, and appreciative, when going down the road or interstate and I look over at someone riding beside me and they're looking through their window and say "I like that truck". I just grin, nod my head.

When I started restoration on my '41 just 13 months ago, my father-in-law told my son, "He's in way over his head; he'll never finish that." I'm just putting the finishing touches on the restoration now and can't wait to drive it out to his place and let him have a look.

Nice.....what is it?

or "Wow, I'm surprized that thing is still on the road!"

or, as I'm putting groceries in the back of the truck at the grocery store: "Does it run?" How do you answer that one?

and least favorite: "I used to have a Ford just like that one"
