If I remember correctly the counterweights on the crankshaft just barely clear the camshaft. I think you have to rotate the crank and cam until the timing marks on the gears are aligned with each other then it will pull out.
There may be another problem though. Good luck.

Yes I am down to just the crank and cam cannot remove crank until I can get the cam out and then remove the plate. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Frank50 is right you have to rotate the crank so the cam can clear it then you can pull the cam out if you're looking at the crank you'll see the crank counter wts. are in the way and hitting the cam bearing journals .

Moves around a 1/4" or so crankshaft is out of the way.

1. Remove all of the lifters and fuel pump. They can interfere with the cam lobes and journals.
2. Remove the distributor.
3. Remove the screws from the cam thrust plate behind the timing gear.
4. Make sure the crank is oriented to clear the cam.
If the cam isn't stuck solid in it's bearings, I can't think af any other thing that could be restricting. Hopefully it's just an oversight and you've already discovered it.
Good luck.

I remember the cam in my 261 being the same way; it would come out about 1/4" and no more; I could hear/feal it hitting something but couldn't tell what; it finally cam out without forcing but I still don't know what it was hitting; I didn't move the crank. Just work with it a while.

Maybe there is something unusual in there that is out of place. I would try looking from the bottom too. If a lobe were hitting something, maybe turning the cam would give you a clue.
