I think there is a number on the driver's door pillar and a matching engine number stamped on the engine near the distributor. It has been a while since I looked at those things.

First VIN is a legal concept with international support that didn't really take hold until the 80's. You have various serial numbers that do not match.

GM trucks in '53 has a body serial number in the driver's side door opening and an engine serial stamped near the distributor. Those numbers are not going to match.

You might personally research the CT law because I suspect it has provisions for old vehicles that your counter person isn't aware of.

When moving from Washington to Oregon, I had a determined state patrol worker spend about an hour and a half with my 50 Chev on a lift looking for some stamped number on my frame. (I did get a bit of free frame cleaning from his wire brush.) No amount of talking or manuals would convince him that he would find nothing and that the engine number on the old title was long gone. He finally gave up and the state assigned the body serial number as my VIN. Stamped in on a cheesy metalic sticker and stuck it to the door pillar.

Nothing would stop someone from putting a number on the frame, but the factory did NOT put the numbers anywhere on the frame.

I've looked pretty hard at a few of these frames and sure have never found reason to question the generally accepted statement that its not there.

None on my 48, and I've seen every square inch of it, inside and out, up close and clean.

There is no vin# stamps on the frames only the door pilar. I did however stamp both of my trucks frames with the vin# for theft reasons. I think it's totally up to you if you want to stamp the frame or not. Just my 2-cents worth...
