What should a good paint job cost? #637161 Tue Apr 13 2010 01:59 AM

I am getting to the point where I need to get some quotes to paint my 55.2 Chevy shortbed. I have done most of the work and have the 2k blocked down with 320. I want the have the body shop seal it with some epoxy and paint it Corvette Yellow (base/clear). I also want the clear polished to a nice mirror finish.

What should I expect to pay for something like this? I know the quotes will answer my question, but am wondering what any of you might have paid.

I would think between 3500 and 6000 it depends on the area and the paint cost and what work they are going to have to do what looks good to us may not to the painter and if you don't listen to them there job will not look right ,I know my painter is a card all his own, good work and good looking job.

I would say 6000 would be a good guess, but it could be more or less depending on how much time is spent on it.

Is it in pieces or together ?. Pieces = more work / more $$
If Body Shop needs to do any filling / sanding at all, 6K would be a good guess.

Pete52 is "on the money" but I might add you do not always get what you pay for and sometimes youj get more. Before I had "David" to the work on my panel I looked at 3 car and one truck he actually painted... and looked at pictures of at least half a dozen more. The guy does not do a show paint job for some "concourse show" but he is a top of the line daily driver. he installed all my floor pans, cowls panels (in and out) and spent hours on doors, and cutting replacing metal. Set the body back on the chassis and installed and adjusted all doors. Total price including ALL materinal and paint was $5800. You can see the work on my photobucket link below. Since then he has painted a 50 Ford, practically built a 37pickup and my neighbors 53 chevy coupe. They all look the same. The Ford was $3000, the 37 pickup was 4600 and the 53 (basketcase) was,I think, $5800. They all look good.
Hope this helps in your search.

I'd rather walk and carry a Chevy hub cap than ride in a Ferd.
I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you smile

A good paint job will cost you in the $2500 to $4500 range now a great paint will cost you upwards of $5000 to $10000 + range. This will be a high end quality paint and all the hardners, primers, sealers, and a top coat of quality clear sanded and shot with clear again then sanded and buffed out.
Remember a good painter is only as good as the prepared base that he has to work with. If you do the body work and block it out your self you may want to have the shop make sure you did not miss any thing when you prepared the base metal for the painter to lay down a great paint job.
Remember materials are really getting high these days and labor has come up some too.

For $8000 I'm getting all the body work, floor pans and cab corners replaced, bed wood finished, 8 coats of clear sanded between the 4th and 5th coats and buffed out. I took it apart and he's putting it back on the frame. I hope this helps.

Thanks for all the input! The shop won't have to do any body work luckily. The truck is together and I want them to shoot the cab with the doors and hood on since I spent tons of hours trying to line 'em up. The bed is apart now for sanding, but I plan on putting it back together just to make sure everything is lined up. So they will have to take apart the bed sides. For the $5,800 that Achipmunk spent, even the $8,000 Charley spent, I wouldn't have screwed around with all the body work! I could have been done with this project by now! I did learn a lot though.

WOW, That's a lot of bucks for paint, I think I'll take another look at Maaco's presidential paint job.

Charley, are you sure 8 coats of clear will be enough ? A stone chip in that finish will be a crater.
Just kidding, I'd like to see it when its done.

Hey Glasman, yeah its alot of money but sometimes you have realize your limitations. I considered the amount of time with lack of talent it would take me to do it myself and still not get what I want. Don't worry I'll post pictures when its done.
